Watching Other Teams

Newcastle United women fans, just like the men fans, would also go and watch other teams play, especially when Newcastle United were away from home. Due to the cost of travel, the time it took to travel, and the greater difficulty of getting time off work, fewer fans tended to go to away games in the 1950s.

They would go to watch other men’s football, because women playing football was very limited in the 1950s.

Fans would go and watch Newcastle United’s reserves team and the youth team. Some would go and watch local Football League side Gateshead. Some went to watch one of the many excellent amateur teams that there were in the region.

Modern fans may find it hard to believe, but many Newcastle United fans – men and women – went to watch Sunderland!
