About Women Football Fans

This website has been developed by Dr. Stacey Pope, an Associate Professor at Durham University in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Stacey is a leading academic on aspects of women and sport.

One of Stacey’s particular research interests is the study of women fans of sport. Thanks to a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Stacey has been researching two aspects of women football fans. First, women fans of Newcastle United FC from the 1950s onwards. Second, current fans of the England women’s football team.

The women football fans that Stacey has interviewed have fascinating stories to tell. Their testimony is an important part of football’s history, which up until now has been largely hidden. This website aims to share their memories and experiences with football fans, as well as anyone with an interest in our social history.
